THE JUICE OF WATERMELON AGAINST ACHES?!

A Spanish study showed that watermelon juice is an excellent product to relieve the aches of athletes because of its high amino acid L-Citrulline.

Martha P. Tarazona-Diaz et al. Department of food engineering of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena wrote: 'the watermelon juice, naturally rich in L-Citrulline, is an excellent option for athletes who want to improve their athletic performance.'

But they add that this good bioavailability presupposed by L-Citrulluine, which is present at the highest level in watermelons, also occurs in other foods such as melons, squash, cucumbers and pumpkins. This amino acid can also be synthesized by the human body using other sources.

THERE WAS LITTLE INTEREST IN THE WATERMELON JUICE, UNTIL NOW...

Until recently, the amino acid L-Citrulline raised little interest within the community of nutrition, due to his status as a non-protein amino acid considered only as a metabolic intermediate in the urea cycle.

Presenting their study, the team said that its antioxidant properties and its ability to generate nitric oxide make it a good candidate for the treatment of diseases such as hypertension, heart failure and atherosclerosis.
Previous studies show it could also be used to treat sickle cell disease, sexual stamina and erectile function. While other benefits related to the contribution of L-Citrulline include better athletic performance due to the synthesis of nitric oxide and a better glucose transport in skeletal muscle.

The current study involved a test of maximum effort with the use of a bicycle Ergometer by seven students from the University of Mercia (22.7 years in average) on three occasions, each athlete drank 500 ml natural watermelon juice (1.17 g of L-Citrulluine), rich watermelon juice (L-Citrulline 4.83 g and 1.17 g of watermelon juice) and a placebo.

LESS ACHES WITH THE JUICE OF PASTÈQUE

The scientists have discovered that there was no significant difference for the pedaling cadence (measured in RPMS) or the heart rhythm, between the juice of natural watermelon ( 1.17 g of L-Citruline), the juice of watermelon enriched (6 g of L-Citrulline) and placebo. There was no difference in the perception of the effort also, but the muscle pain, 24 hours after the exercise were significantly higher for the cyclists who drank the placebo, while the results of cyclists who drank the juice standards and enriched do not differ, This indicates that 1.17 g of the amino acid L-Citrulline is sufficient to help reduce the physical pain.
